IIM Alumni Society Road Map

IIM Alumni Society Road Map
As a starting point focusing on the virtual world since is easier to "prototype" and "implement" and then will venture into the real world

Some baby steps are:

1) IIM Intranet (free platform) .. Status: Already Done and tested with 200 members globally. Just need to roll out to the bigger group

Try this, http://iim-alumni.collectivex.com
2) IIM Alumni Extranet via linking all alumni on

linkedinhttp://www.linkedin.com/e/gis/36556/6E5FF2691A0D

Facebook (next google), some examples
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2251656082
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=7200276010
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=5718426914

3) IIM Alumni Website

Intranet will transfer to http://www.iim-alumni.org and Extranet will have links. We have been trying to get some "world class volunteers for design, interface, graphics, hosting etc. We don't want to do an amateur effort ( has to beat HBS,Yale,Columbia etc etc)

Need to leverage and hook up with IIM Chapters global. Besides the 6 campus cities ABCIKL, have received requests from Mumbai, Delhi, Hyd, Chennai etc for chapters, UK has strongest team under Mehmood, , Europe mainland, Singapore (very very active chapter - have 15 of my friends, seniors there), Korea (have a senior volunteer to open a chapter since she and her husband both are alum just relocated there from stamford,ct), IIM Middle East (have received request from them that don't ignore us), IIM China (Indore has exchange program and good network), Tristate (East Coast team - Arindam, Alan, Nitin, Adri,Priya,Rajesh,Nirav, Sabitha,me), Texas, Chicago and California also have strong teams

4) IIM Alumni Society Formation

This will be a real org with offices in Ahmedabad, Bangalore,Calcutta (Kolkatta), Indore, Kozikode (Calicut), Lucknow, London, New York, Amsterdam, Sanghai, Nairobi, Bali, Tokyo, Dubai, Berlin, Patna, Jamshedpur, Jhumri Tilaiya :-) etc etc

some best practices to benchmark are, http://www.asiasociety.org , http://www.japansociety.org , Nasscom, Tie, World Affairs Forum, Yale-Columbia-Princeton-Harvard Club etc .. am in touch with all of these and part of most where I qualify. If needed will join Columbia or Princeton to get the "network" beyond friends

Some key challenges and opportunities

1) Advisory Board

we have the problem of plenty rather than less .. just need to "trust" us

Prof. Marti, Tiger, Jerry Rao, Rajiv Johari, Narayan Murthy, Banga and likes are very strong advocates and supporters
Have hooks to Frank Pallone and many senators, Obama (he is linkedin), Clintons (case study in my upcoming book), Steve Jobs etc

Between Mehmood, Chitra, Mudit, Adri, Arindam, Nitin, Ashima, Alan, Rajesh .. we have the best of the best in reach including Indra Nooyi, Prahlad, Dattar and others

IIM Europe and Singapore chapters have also very strong local govt and industry relations .. problem of plenty and we might have to be selective .. you can get 10 of your "entrepreneurial" batchmates .. the ones we talked about yesterday

Prof. Manikutty can get Prahlad
and likes

I can get Pramod Bhasin, Rajat Gupta and likes from Genpact Board and Jeff Immelt, Beth Comstock and similar profiles from GE Board

Similalry Adri has 15 more similar names and so do rest of us .. yesterday we discovered that S&P CEO is Arvind's close friend from BIT Mesra .. am sure there are many more "hidden gems" to be tapped

2) Vision, Mission, Charter, Governance, Sponsorship, Media etc are cake walk

Trust us. If my team of passionate people can sell a junk bond like "Bihar" under the name of "Bihar 2.0" with AAA+ rating to APJ Kalam, Amartya Sen then selling a brand like IIM-A and IIM will be like cake-walk. Didn't my hero "Dasrath Manjhi" dug a tunnel inside a hill alone in 22 years. Then IIM Alumni Society will not take that long. We can have inaugural global meet next spring on a scale as big as IIT or Davos

Also have instilled enough guilt in CII + the Corporate world including Cisco, Warburg, Kotak, Max, Godrej, Infy, Birla that they will be glad to get rid of the burden of forgetting to invite IIT/IIM in the India@60 celebrations. They will do whatever we ask from them

Cheers
